Travel by dog team or snowmobile from Inuvik to the historic 1800's
whaling station on Herschel Island in the northern reaches in the Yukon
Territories. We take a route across the MacKenzie River, North America's
2nd largest river delta. Once we arrive at the
Beaufort Sea we will be travelling along the Arctic coastline with
opportunities to see: muskox, caribou, fox, wolverine, wolves, seals and
possibly polar bear. Note, the Aurora Borealis is often at its peak in the
spring when we will be travelling. The Richardson Mountains are visible
throughout the trip, if we are travelling by snowmachine we may visit this
region on the way. Along the Yukon coast there are several DEW(Distant
Early Warning) radar sites abandoned or remotely operated, reminders of the
"Cold War era".
Over-night we will be staying in tents or rustic cabins. On Herschel
Island you will be staying in the abandoned whaling station buildings. These
trips are participatory (help out when you can). It is important to know
that in the Arctic "the weather rules" and that the itinerary and travel
time can vary. We travel from Inuvik to Herschel in April when it's still
below freezing but not too cold.
